Nella prima prova speciale di martedì 30 maggio, Auriol fu vittima di ben due forature, ma incredibilmente riuscì a ottenere il miglior tempo. Oltre allo stato di forma perfetta del francese, parte del merito fu anche delle gomme Michelin con sistema Ats.
